About Dr. Dorothy
Starting counseling can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not at your best. I believe caring for your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health. Just like you’d see a doctor when you’re not feeling well, it can be helpful to talk with a counselor when you’re experiencing anxiety, depression, or facing challenges like co-parenting. Counseling provides support, tools, and guidance to help you feel stronger and more balanced in your daily life.
I’m a mom of two children and have also been a step-parent to two more for the past 12 years. Each relationship is different and comes with its own ups and downs, but I’ve found some simple, consistent tools that make co-parenting a little smoother. While conducting my dissertation study, I’ve learned from thousands of parents who shared their experiences in an online co-parenting course, and I bring those helpful insights into the work I do today.
I’ve spent over 20 years helping adults, kids, and families through life’s challenges. Along the way, I’ve taught counseling at colleges, created programs to support co-parents, and earned a doctorate in mental health counseling and human developement. My goal is to make the counseling process supportive, practical, and encouraging for everyone I work with.
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, children, and three dogs. Freyja, who is in the picture, is a trained therapy dog who visits with children and adults in various locations.
What to Expect
I offer counseling through telehealth, which I’ve been doing since 2018. Online sessions make it simple to fit therapy into your busy life, and together we’ll create a plan that matches your goals—there’s no set number of sessions.
My approach is solution-focused and grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy. In our first session, we’ll get to know each other and explore your strengths, building on what you already do well to help you move forward.
The counseling relationship is key—you should feel comfortable and supported. This is your next chapter, and together we’ll build skills to help you navigate it with confidence.
